What is therapy?

We all face difficulties in life which can bring up feelings and thoughts we'd rather not have. Sometimes we act in ways which are unhelpful, even damaging and we don't understand why we keep doing it!

Maybe you feel like you're sinking and need a hand to pull you up from the deep. Perhaps you need a little encouragement to swim to shore. It could be that just dipping your toe into the vast ocean of the unknown feels overwhelming.

Therapy can act as a lifeline which gives you the necessary conditions to stay safe whilst you dive beneath the surface and explore the beautiful complexity of what makes you who you are.

Do I need therapy?

The decision to enter into therapy can be a difficult one but the fact you're reading this means you're thinking about it. So, how do you know if it's for you and how do you know who can help?

You may assume that counselling is for people who have a diagnosed mental illness. Or you might think that counselling can benefit almost anyone, at any stage of their life. Both of these perspectives are right. Whether you are wanting to expand on your current understanding and develop as a person, just trying to survive, or any number of things in between, it's a personal choice which can only be made by you.

If you're looking for someone to take control, tell you what to do or fix your problems then therapy might not be for you. If you're ready to consider looking at what's not working and try out new ways of being, then you're probably in a good place to begin the therapeutic journey.

A good counsellor will give you the space you need to explore your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours in a way which empowers you to create new choices in your life.

There are lots of different types of therapy and you might want to talk to a few counsellors and get a sense of how they work before committing to booking a session. Or maybe you have started therapy but change your mind. It's important for you to shop around and test the water so that you can make an informed choice about who you want to work with. That's why we offer a free consultation with our Counsellor, Donna.

Donna Broadhead

Hi, I'm Donna - Turn The Tide's founder and currently our first and only counsellor. I qualified in 2017 and have been busy in self-employment and researching Gaming and Online Addictions since then.

I have volunteered in a mental health charity and for Victim Support offering telephone and face-to-face support for those who felt they needed a little help.

More recently I have been working with colleges across the country to deliver therapy to young people remotely throughout the pandemic.

Hello there, I'm Chris and I work behind the scenes with the general day-to-day running of the business.

This includes things like updating policies and procedures, keeping the accounts and creating effective spreadsheets.

It's unlikely we'll ever meet and I'll never have access to any of your personal information.

I maintain the website and strategise online working procedures. I make sure things run as smoothly as possible so that Donna can focus on working with you. I'm still studying so I'm really grateful to Donna for opening up this opportunity for me to get some real working experience.
